How does the shepherdless flock receive strength?
Atlas of Saints · Chapter summary
False comfort contrasts with visitation, mercy and gathering.
Chapter breakdown
The heading directs seeking God rather than idols and interprets church victories originating among Jews. The command asks latter-season rain; God makes snows, gives showers and field grass. Idols speak unprofitably, diviners see lies and dreamers give vain comfort; people are led away like a shepherdless, afflicted flock. Wrath addresses shepherds and buck goats, while God visits Juda’s flock and makes it his glorious battle horse. Corner, pin, battle bow and exacter come from him. Mighty men tread the ways’ mire and fight because God is present; horse riders are confounded.
God strengthens Juda and saves Joseph, returning them in mercy as though not rejected, hearing them as their God. They resemble Ephraim’s valiant men, rejoicing as through wine; children see and rejoice in God. He whistles and gathers redeemed people and multiplies them as before. He will sow them among peoples, where they remember from afar, live with children and return. Egypt and Assyria’s people are gathered to Galaad and Libanus beyond available space. He passes the sea strait, strikes waves and confounds river depths, humbling Assyria’s pride and removing Egypt’s sceptre. He strengthens them in the Lord to walk in his name. Snows must not become storm clouds, exacter a righteous commander, or the battle horse invincible.
