What does Psalms Chapter 130 say, and which statements belong to its speaker?

Atlas of Saints · Chapter summary

Heart and eyes are described as unexalted. Conditional words link weaned child and soul reward. Israel is called to hope now forever.

Chapter breakdown

Domine, none est is the admitted incipit, retained as printed. The heading names the prophet’s humility and the inscription a gradual canticle of David. He says his heart is not exalted and eyes not lofty, and he has not walked in great matters or wonderful things above him. No court-entry scene or administrative schemes are identified.

The next verse gives conditional words: if he was not humbly minded but exalted his soul, as a weaned child is toward his mother, so reward in his soul. The difficult wording is retained without certifying an accomplished tranquil state, a child resting at a breast or an explanation of its cravings.

Israel is called to hope in the Lord from now forever. This invitation is not a proof that personal serenity is a necessary causal prerequisite for national hope.
