Chapter breakdown

Ecclesiasticus 46 praises Jesus son of Nave, identified by the edition with Josue. His name, succession to Moses, raised hands and sword, victory and Israel's inheritance frame the remembrance. The sun's delayed setting and a day compared with two accompany the account. Surrounded by enemies, he calls on the sovereign Lord; hail strikes the opposing force. The Bethhoron identification belongs to the separate edition explanation.

Josue and Caleb remain faithful during Moses' days, opposing sin and murmuring. They are the two appointed deliverers out of six hundred thousand footmen to receive the land flowing with milk and honey. Caleb retains strength in old age and receives high places, without naming Hebron here. Judges whose hearts remained uncorrupted receive remembrance and prayers for their bones and descendants.

Samuel is remembered for renewed government, anointing princes, judgment and faithful prophecy. He calls on God with an unblemished lamb when enemies surround him; thunder crushes the hostile princes and Philistine lords. Near life's end he declares before the Lord and the anointed that he took neither money nor anything, even a shoe, and no accusation follows. After his sleep, the account attributes prophecy and a voice from the earth to him concerning the king's end and the nation's evil. It supplies no necromancer scene.
