How do the tongues, Peter’s explanation and hearers’ response unfold?

Atlas of Saints · Chapter summary

Multilingual wonder and mockery lead into Joel and David exposition, penance/baptism direction and communal practice.

Chapter breakdown

When the days of Pentecost are accomplished, they are together. Suddenly a heavenly sound as of a mighty wind fills their house; parted tongues as of fire appear and sit on each. All are filled with the Holy Ghost and speak divers tongues as He gives them. Devout Jews of every nation dwell in Jerusalem. When this is made known, a multitude gathers, confused because each hears his own tongue. They wonder at Galilean speakers speaking their native tongues: Parthians, Medes, Elamites, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, Libya about Cyrene, strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians. They hear God’s wonderful works and ask the meaning; others mock as new-wine drunkenness.

Peter rises with the eleven and calls Judea’s men and Jerusalem’s residents to hear. He says they are not drunk at the third hour, identifying Joel’s words: in last days the Lord pours His Spirit on all flesh, sons and daughters prophesy, young see visions, old dream, and servants and handmaids prophesy. Wonders in heaven and signs below include blood, fire, smoke, sun darkness and moon blood before the great manifest day; callers on the Lord’s name are saved. He addresses Israel’s men about Jesus of Nazareth, God-approved by miracles, wonders and signs among them which they know. Delivered by God’s determinate counsel and foreknowledge, He was crucified and slain by their wicked hands. The edition explains God and His Son’s holy self-giving for love and salvation while betrayers and crucifiers act from malice and devil’s instigation, not God’s determination of wickedness. God permits and draws saving good, without authoring wickedness.

God raises him, loosing the sorrows of hell, since he cannot be held by it. The edition explains overcoming grievous death pains and hell’s power. Peter quotes David: the Lord before him and at his right hand keeps him unmoved, heart and tongue rejoice, flesh rests in hope, soul not left in hell and Holy One not seeing corruption; life’s ways are made known with joy in His countenance. David died and was buried, his tomb still with them. A prophet knowing the sworn throne promise to his offspring, he foresaw Christ’s resurrection, neither left in hell nor flesh corrupted. Peter calls them witnesses of God’s raising Jesus. Exalted by God’s right hand, He receives the Father’s Holy Ghost promise and pours what they see and hear. David did not ascend but spoke of his Lord seated at the Lord’s right hand until enemies become footstool. Israel should know God made Jesus, whom they crucified, Lord and Christ.

Hearers have compunction and ask Peter and the other apostles what to do. He directs penance and baptism in Jesus Christ’s name for sin remission, with Holy Ghost gift, the promise for them, their children and far-off people the Lord calls. With many further words Peter testifies and exhorts them to save themselves from this perverse generation. Those receiving his word are baptized, about 3000 souls added that day. They persevere in apostolic doctrine, communication of breaking bread and prayers. Fear comes on every soul, with many apostolic wonders and signs in Jerusalem and great fear in all. Believers are together with things common, selling goods and possessions and dividing according to need. Daily accord in the temple and house-to-house bread breaking accompany gladness and simplicity in meals, praise and favor with all people. The Lord increases together daily those who should be saved.

The story inside

Hearers with compunction ask what to do; Peter directs penance and baptism. Those receiving his word are baptized, about 3000 added. The account supplies no named hearer’s private constraints or the content of Peter’s very many additional words.

Lessons worth keeping

  1. 1
Sound as wind and tongues as fire preserve comparison rather than proving literal weather or flames.
  2. 2
Peter’s Joel quotation includes servants, handmaids, sun darkness and moon blood.
  3. 3
Shared goods according to need do not establish elimination of poverty or a universal property policy.
