Resumen del capítulo

¿Por qué perdona Salomón la vida de Abiathar pero hace ejecutar a Adonias, Joab y Semei?

Da razones diferentes en cada caso. Abiathar llevó el arca ante David y compartió sus aflicciones, así que Salomón lo perdona en aquel momento pero lo retira del sacerdocio. Salomón trata la petición de Adonias como una petición del reino, nombra las muertes de Abner y Amasa por Joab y confronta a Semei por romper el juramento y el mandato de permanecer en Jerusalén.

Explicación del capítulo

Al acercarse la muerte de David, da un encargo a su hijo Salomón. Dice que va por el camino de toda carne y dice a Salomón que cobre ánimo y se muestre hombre. Salomón debe guardar el encargo del Señor su Dios, andar en sus caminos y observar sus ceremonias, preceptos, juicios y testimonios como están escritos en la ley de Moisés, para comprender todo lo que hace y dondequiera que se vuelva. David recuerda las palabras del Señor: si sus hijos cuidan sus caminos y andan ante Dios en verdad con todo su corazón y alma, no le faltará un hombre en el trono de Israel.

David recuerda a Salomón lo que Joab, hijo de Sarvia, le hizo a él y a dos capitanes del ejército de Israel: Abner, hijo de Ner, y Amasa, hijo de Jether. Joab los mató, derramando sangre de guerra en paz y poniendo esa sangre en el cinturón de sus lomos y los zapatos de sus pies.

La nota separada de Challoner dice que las instrucciones de David sobre Joab y Semei venían de celo por la justicia, para que crímenes públicos y atroces no quedaran impunes, en vez de rencor o resentimiento privado.

David dice a Salomón que actúe según su sabiduría y no deje que la cabeza canosa de Joab baje al infierno en paz.

Challoner explica por separado que infierno aquí significa el lugar y estado de los muertos, no el lugar o estado de condenación.

David dice a Salomón que muestre bondad a los hijos de Berzellai el galaadita y los deje comer a su mesa porque le salieron al encuentro cuando huyó de Absalom, hermano de Salomón. También nombra a Semei, hijo de Gera, hijo de Jemini, de Bahurim, que lo maldijo gravemente cuando fue al campamento. Semei después le salió al encuentro cuando cruzó el Jordán y David juró por el Señor no matarlo con la espada. David dice a Salomón que no tenga a Semei por inocente: Salomón es sabio y sabe qué hacer, y debe hacer bajar las canas de Semei con sangre a la sepultura.

David duerme con sus padres y es enterrado en la ciudad de David. Su reinado en Israel suma cuarenta años: siete en Hebron y treinta y tres en Jerusalén. Salomón se sienta en el trono de David su padre y su reino se fortalece sumamente.

Adonias, hijo de Haggith, viene a Bethsabee, madre de Salomón. Pregunta si viene en paz y él dice que sí. Con permiso para hablar, dice que el reino era suyo y todo Israel lo prefería como rey, pero ha pasado a su hermano porque el Señor se lo dispuso. Hace una petición y le pide que no lo rechace. Quiere que pida a Salomón, que dice que no puede negarle nada, que le dé a Abisag la sunamita por esposa. Bethsabee acepta hablar por él.

Bethsabee viene a hablar por Adonias. Salomón se levanta a recibirla, se inclina ante ella y se sienta en su trono. Se pone un trono para su madre a su derecha. Ella hace una pequeña petición y le pide que no la ponga en confusión. La invita a pedir diciendo que no debe rechazarla. Pide que Abisag sea dada por esposa a Adonias, su hermano. Salomón pregunta por qué pide a Abisag para Adonias y le dice que pida también el reino para él: Adonias es su hermano mayor y tiene a Abiathar el sacerdote y a Joab, hijo de Sarvia.

Salomón jura por el Señor, invocando castigo de Dios sobre sí si Adonias no ha dicho esta palabra contra su propia vida. Por el Señor vivo que lo estableció, lo puso en el trono de David su padre y le hizo una casa como prometió, declara que Adonias será ejecutado aquel día. Envía a Banaias, hijo de Joiada, quien mata a Adonias.

Salomón dice a Abiathar el sacerdote que vaya a sus tierras en Anathoth. Dice que Abiathar merece la muerte pero no será ejecutado en aquel momento porque llevó el arca del Señor Dios ante David y soportó aflicción en todas las aflicciones de David. Salomón lo retira de ser sacerdote del Señor, cumpliendo la palabra del Señor sobre la casa de Heli en Silo.

La noticia llega a Joab, quien siguió a Adonias en vez de a Salomón. Huye al tabernáculo del Señor y agarra el cuerno del altar. Cuando Salomón oye dónde está envía a Banaias, hijo de Joiada, para matarlo. Banaias dice a Joab que salga por orden del rey, pero Joab se niega y dice que morirá allí. Banaias informa de la respuesta. Salomón le ordena hacer como Joab ha dicho, matarlo y enterrarlo, y quitar de Salomón y la casa de su padre la sangre inocente que Joab derramó.

Salomón dice que el Señor devolverá la sangre de Joab sobre su propia cabeza porque asesinó a dos hombres justos y mejores que él sin saberlo David: Abner, hijo de Ner, general del ejército de Israel, y Amasa, hijo de Jether, general del ejército de Judá. Su sangre volverá sobre Joab y su descendencia para siempre mientras la paz del Señor permanecerá para siempre con David, su descendencia, su casa y su trono. Banaias sube, mata a Joab y Joab es enterrado en su casa en el desierto. Salomón nombra a Banaias sobre el ejército en lugar de Joab y pone a Sadoc el sacerdote en lugar de Abiathar.

Salomón llama a Semei y le dice que construya una casa en Jerusalén y viva allí sin salir a ningún lugar. Advierte que el día que Semei salga y cruce el arroyo Cedron será ejecutado y su sangre estará sobre su propia cabeza. Semei acepta el dicho como bueno y promete hacer lo que su señor el rey ha dicho. Vive en Jerusalén muchos días.

Después de tres años los criados de Semei huyen a Achis, hijo de Maacha, rey de Geth. A Semei le cuentan que están en Geth. Ensilla su asno, va allí a Achis a buscarlos y los trae de vuelta. A Salomón le cuentan que Semei ha ido de Jerusalén a Geth y ha vuelto.

Salomón llama a Semei y le recuerda que le advirtió por el Señor que salir y andar fuera por cualquier lugar significaría la muerte, y que Semei aceptó la advertencia como buena. Pregunta por qué Semei no ha guardado el juramento del Señor y el mandamiento impuesto. Salomón dice que Semei sabe en su corazón todo el mal que hizo a David y el Señor ha devuelto esa maldad sobre su propia cabeza. Salomón dice que será bendecido y el trono de David establecido ante el Señor para siempre. Manda a Banaias, hijo de Joiada, quien sale, golpea a Semei y lo mata.

La historia del capítulo

El último encargo de David une la ley del Señor y la condición para el gobierno continuado de sus hijos con obligaciones nombradas respecto de Joab, los hijos de Berzellai y Semei. Tras la muerte de David, Salomón atiende varios casos distintos. Adonias pide por medio de Bethsabee a Abisag por esposa; Salomón vincula esa petición al reino y ordena su muerte. Abiathar es enviado a Anathoth y retirado del sacerdocio, pero su servicio pasado con David se da como razón para perdonar su vida en aquel momento. Joab se niega a dejar el altar y Salomón nombra la sangre inocente de Abner y Amasa como razón para matarlo. Semei acepta un mandato de permanecer en Jerusalén y luego sale tras tres años para recuperar a sus criados. Salomón lo confronta sobre el juramento y el mandato antes de ordenar su muerte. Cada caso conserva su propia razón declarada en vez de reducirse a una afirmación general sobre castigo.

Lecciones para recordar

  1. Las palabras de David sobre el trono incluyen una condición: sus hijos deben cuidar sus caminos y andar ante Dios en verdad con todo su corazón y alma. Conservar esa condición explica por qué el encargo inicial incluye las ceremonias, preceptos, juicios y testimonios de la ley de Moisés.
  2. El caso de Abiathar incluye juicio y contención. Salomón dice que merece la muerte pero nombra llevar el arca y compartir las aflicciones de David como razones para no matarlo en aquel momento. La retirada del sacerdocio y el cumplimiento sobre la casa de Heli están separados de esa vida perdonada.
  3. El viaje de Semei está vinculado a un mandato que ya ha aceptado. Sale de Jerusalén para recuperar a sus criados después de tres años, vuelve y se le pregunta por qué rompió el juramento y el mandato. Se conserva la razón del viaje, pero la fuente no dice que creara una excepción a la restricción.

    2:39. And it came to pass after three years, that the servants of Semei ran away to Achis, the son of Maacha, the king of Geth: and it was told Semei that his servants were gone to Geth. 2:40. And Semei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Achis, to Geth, to seek his servants, and he brought them out of Geth. 2:41. And it was told Solomon, that Semei had gone from Jerusalem to Geth, and was come back.
