Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was a North African bishop, theologian, and writer whose Confessions and City of God shaped Western Christianity. Born in Thagaste in Roman Numidia, he taught rhetoric in Carthage, Rome, and Milan before his conversion and his baptism by Ambrose in 387. He served as bishop of Hippo Regius for more than three decades and is honored in the Catholic Church as a saint and Doctor of the Church.
