Chapter breakdown
Job wishes for the former months when God kept him, His lamp shone above him and he walked through darkness by its light. He recalls youth, God's secret presence in his tabernacle, the Almighty with him and servants around him. His feet were washed with butter and rock poured oil. At the city gate he prepared a chair in the street: young men hid, elders stood, princes stopped speaking and rulers' tongues cleaved to their throats.
Job says those hearing and seeing blessed and bore witness to him because he delivered the crying poor and fatherless, received the blessing of one ready to perish and comforted the widow. Justice and judgment were his robe and diadem. He was eyes to the blind, feet to the lame and father to the poor; he diligently investigated an unknown cause, broke the wicked man's jaws and removed prey from his teeth.
In Job’s speech, he recalls saying he would die in his nest and multiply days like a palm, with roots by waters and dew remaining in his harvest. He expected glory always renewed and his bow repaired. Others waited silently for his sentence and counsel and received his words as rain, opening their mouths as for latter rain. If he laughed they did not believe it, and the light of his countenance did not fall to earth. If he wished to go among them he sat first; he compares his place with a king surrounded by an army, comforting mourners. The chapter does not establish a royal appointment.
