What does Jesus pray for those given Him and those believing through their word?

Atlas of Saints · Chapter summary

Jesus asks for glorification, keeping and sanctification of His disciples and unity of those believing through their word.

Chapter breakdown

Jesus lifts His eyes to heaven and tells the Father the hour has come, asking Him to glorify the Son so the Son may glorify Him. He has given the Son power over all flesh to give eternal life to all given Him. Eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. Jesus has glorified Him on earth and finished the work given Him; He asks for glory with the Father, the glory He had with Him before the world was.

He has manifested the Father’s name to men given Him out of the world. They belonged to the Father, were given Him and kept the Father’s word. They know what He has received comes from the Father because He gave them the Father’s words; they received them, knew He came from Him and believed His sending. He prays for them rather than the world because they are the Father’s. His things are the Father’s and the Father’s His, and He is glorified in them. Saying He is not in the world while they are and He comes to the Father, He asks the Holy Father to keep them in His name so they may be one as they are. While with them He kept them in that name; none is lost except the son of perdition, so scripture may be fulfilled. He speaks in the world as He comes to the Father so His joy may be filled in them.

He has given them the Father’s word; the world hates them because, like Him, they are not of the world. He asks not that they be taken from the world but kept from evil. He repeats that they are not of the world, asks their sanctification in truth and says the Father’s word is truth. As the Father sent Him into the world He sent them, sanctifying Himself for them so they too may be sanctified in truth.

He prays also for those who will believe through their word, that all may be one as the Father in Him and He in the Father, one in them so the world may believe His sending. He has given them His received glory so they may be one as they are. He in them and the Father in Him, they may be perfected in one so the world knows His sending and the Father’s love for them as for Him. He wills that those given Him be with Him where He is to see His given glory, because the Father loved Him before creation. Addressing the Just Father, He says the world has not known Him, He has known Him, and these know His sending. He has made and will make known the Father’s name so the Father’s love for Him may be in them, and He in them.

The story inside

The prayer moves from glorification to men given Him, then to believers through their word. It asks for their keeping from evil within the world rather than their removal, and for unity so the world may believe His sending. No audience response or outcome is narrated.

Lessons worth keeping

  1. 1
Keep from evil is the wording here, without replacing it with an explicitly named evil one.
  2. 2
Unity is a petition with stated purpose, not a reported guarantee of universal conversion.
  3. 3
No upper-room location, named High Priestly title, beatific-vision terminology or hierarchy is supplied in this span.
