What does Jeremias Chapter 43 say, and which statements belong to its speaker?
Atlas of Saints · Chapter summary
Men accuse the prophet and take the remnant to Egypt. Hidden stones precede a throne announcement. The invasion and destruction remain prophetic announcements.
Chapter breakdown
Jeremias 43 follows the completed report. Azarias son of Osaias, Johanan son of Caree and proud men accuse Jeremias of lying and claim Baruch incites him to deliver them to the Chaldeans for death or captivity. These are their accusations, not verified descriptions of Baruch’s intent. They do not obey the command to remain.
Johanan and captains take the returned remnant, men, women, children, king’s daughters, Jeremias and Baruch into Egypt to Taphnis. The text does not specify a forced march or western route. There the Lord commands great stones hidden in the vault under the brick wall at Pharaoh’s house gate before Juda’s men.
The oracle announces Nabuchodonosor’s throne over those stones. He will strike Egypt, with death, captivity and sword for their appointed recipients. He will burn temples and carry gods captive, array himself with Egypt like a shepherd’s garment and depart in peace. He will break statues of the house of the sun and burn Egyptian temples. Mortar pavement, a pavilion, trophy motives, named Heliopolis and a dated fulfillment are not supplied; this is an announced invasion, not a narrated completed event.
